When the Bosnian war broke out, her parents Sabahudin and Emira, who was pregnant with their son at the time, walked out of their house with only what they could carry and came to America. You may know Sabahudin who owns Downtown Tailoring and Emira as the customer service manager at Hy-Vee. Fast forward to their daughter who was in band, speech club, track, soccer, and cheer. She was also a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She speaks English, German, and Serbian / Croatian. Before she graduated last spring, she earned her Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood putting her at junior year status this year at university where she plans to double major in Political Science and English with intensions of going onto law school. What impressed me the most was her gumption. I had to ask, “What does your dad, the tailor, say about those jeans with the ripped out knees?” She rolled her eyes, smiled, and in her best Bosnian accent imitated, “Ah-no! Why you buy like that? Give to me, I fix!” 9/7/22
